Exorcising evil with a single cry. The ultimate protective charm harboring justice and courage.
Capturing the climactic “Shibaraku!” cry from Kabuki, this Hagoita features the hero Kamakura Gongoro, who triumphs over evil with justice and immense physical power. His iconic oversized costume and bold “kumadori” makeup are rendered using vibrant silk and the 3D “Oshie” technique on a paulownia wood base. The artisans’ skill is evident in the dynamic tension of the figure, which seems to step out of the wooden frame to protect the home. This is a quintessential Japanese lucky charm, displayed during the New Year to protect children from harm and ensure a resilient, healthy life. It is a powerful talisman of protection and a masterpiece of traditional craftsmanship, symbolizing the hope for a world where justice and goodness always prevail. By gifting this, family members express their wish for the child to grow up brave, fair, and strong enough to protect what is right.
