Yame, The Region Behind Japan’s Best Matcha
In the cool, misty climate of southern Fukuoka lies Yame, a region known as Japan’s finest terroir for matcha. Here, tea plants grow under shade nets, absorbing richness from the fertile soil and mountain air. This region produces less than 3% of Japan’s total tea—but nearly half of its highest-grade matcha.

Meet the Maker Koga Seicha
Founded in 1819, Koga Seicha is one of the most established tea producers in Yame. For over nine generations, they have combined time-honored craft with modern precision to produce award-winning matcha and sencha. Today, under the guidance of Yoshinobu Koga, a 5th Dan national tea judge, Koga continues to represent the highest standard of Japanese green tea.
200 Years of Innovation and Tea Excellence
Koga’s journey began with Heiroku Koga, who first brought roasted tea from Yame to Osaka in 1819. In 1831, he was among the first in the region to adopt the Aoisei method from Uji—ushering in the era of green tea as we know it. Through centuries of refinement, including honors from the Japanese government, Koga Seicha has shaped not only Yame’s legacy—but Japan’s national tea culture.
