Unwavering loyalty and strong bonds. A guardian for a child’s steadfast heart.
This masterpiece Hagoita depicts the legendary climax of the Kabuki play “Kanjincho,” one of the most revered stories in Japanese culture. It portrays the loyal warrior-monk Benkei as he protects his lord, Yoshitsune, during their perilous journey through the Ataka barrier. The artwork captures the intense drama of loyalty, sacrifice, and the profound bond between master and servant. The figure is brought to life using the traditional “Oshie” (padded fabric relief) technique, where master artisans meticulously layer premium silk over soft cotton to create a stunning three-dimensional effect that seems to breathe with life. The foundation is crafted from high-quality paulownia wood, prized for its lightness and resistance to the passage of time. Traditionally gifted to celebrate a girl’s first New Year, this Hagoita serves as a spiritual guardian, carrying a wish for the child to grow with a strong heart, unwavering integrity, and the wisdom to overcome any adversity.
