Explore Our Handcrafted Hamayumi Collection and bring home a symbol of protection and fortune
In Japan, the Hamayumi (破魔弓), or "demon-breaking bow," is a traditional symbol of protection and good fortune. Displayed during the New Year and gifted to young boys, this sacred bow and arrow set is believed to ward off evil and ensure a strong, prosperous future. Rooted in samurai customs and spiritual traditions, the Hamayumi remains a cherished artifact, carrying the essence of strength, guidance, and ancestral blessings.
Since ancient times, bows and arrows have been revered for their mystical power to repel misfortune. In samurai culture, warriors carried bows not only as weapons but as protective talismans against unseen threats. This belief extended into everyday life, where the Hamayumi was displayed in homes and shrines to safeguard families from misfortune.
By the Kamakura period (1185–1333), it became a tradition to gift a Hamayumi set to samurai children, symbolizing a wish for them to grow strong, disciplined, and righteous. Over centuries, this practice evolved into a custom for all families, ensuring that the blessings of courage and resilience are passed down to the next generation.
Even in the modern world, families continue to display Hamayumi at the start of each year, believing in its power to clear away misfortune and ensure success. It is a meaningful gift for newborn boys, much like Gogatsu Dolls, serving as a wish for strength, wisdom, and protection throughout life.
Beyond Japan, collectors and cultural enthusiasts admire Hamayumi for its historical depth and spiritual significance, making it not just a tradition, but a piece of Japan’s enduring heritage.
The wooden shafts are lacquered with cashew paint and decorated with real gold foil. Each feather is hand-trimmed to resemble a hawk feather, symbolizing strength and sharp vision.
After adjusting the arrow lengths, the feathers are placed vertically to create a gentle slope, adding balance and elegance to the display.
A tassel is added to the rattan-wrapped bow, and chrysanthemum-shaped tassels are tied to the arrows—symbols of longevity and protection.
At Fujiki Crafts, we see Hamayumi as more than an object—it is a guardian of tradition, a connection to Japan’s samurai past, and a timeless symbol of protection. Through our expert craftsmanship and dedication to authenticity, we ensure that the spirit of Hamayumi lives on, inspiring future generations to embrace its legacy of strength and guidance.
